Come on man. Musik bagus, seperti halnya revolusi, akan susah ditemui di televisi. Channel youtube Sounds From The Cornerbisa menjadi tempat yang bagus untuk memulai eksplorasi. Ada banyak musik lokal bagus di luar studio Dahsyat dan yang kamu butuhkan adalah mencari lebih dalam.
My plan for this mayday holiday was to be productive. Finish one or two unread books or maybe blogging about something smart. But due to unforeseen circumstance, the plan goes out to the window. I spent the whole afternoon watching youtube instead.
By unforeseen events, it was me discovering Black Book, a documentary about Indonesian hip hop created by Hiphopindo. Blackbook tell the chronicles hiphop movement since the release of Pesta Rap. It was so damn good, i spent entire evening checking most of the featured artist. Cant recommend it enough, go check it out.
Still in an attempt to be productive while being Blackbook still lingering in my mind, i created list of several dope local hip hop track which i think everyone should listen to.
My first early recollection of Indonesian Metal was Metalik Klinik I cassette . It has several legendary band from the local scene such as Jasad, Tengkorak, Bluekuthuq, Purgatory and Betrayer. The bassline from Betrayer’s Bendera Kuningstill plays clearly in my head.
Back in 2002-2004, there was Wijaya Metal program in Wijaya FM from 6 to 9 pm. Not just usual radio friendly metal such as Avenged Sevenfold or Edane’s Kau Pikir Kau lah segalanya, But they play even the extreme ones such as to Dimmu Borgir’s Progenies of the great apocalypse, Craddle of Filth & Finntroll’s ridiculously catchy Trollhamaren. The kind of music modern radio wont even poke using a long stick. This programs also play local music which introduced me Surabaya’s local metal music such as Devadata.
One thing i didnt like about the old local metal releases was the shitty recording quality. Getting a overpowered muddy distortion with blast beat banging your ears makes the album not comfortable to listen to. It was really annoying especially in Metalik Klinik series. This issue was gladfully over in this modern days. Even the not-yet popular band like Nectura is able to release metal album with very good audio quality.
Enough for the long intro, heres the review of metal albums taken from my CD shelf for today’s edition of Indonesian Sounds.
No, not vinyl, just CDs. I want to jump in to that hype train though, but the 300-500k IDR for each vinyl plates price range stops me right there. Most of the CDs in my shelf are local Indonesian music. If you look a bit further than whats playing on TV and radio, Indonesian music scene is blooming with quality music these days. Find out the release from label such as Demajors, FFWDand Grimlocto listen the examples of what im talking about.
Rather than just sitting there, i thought it will be good to write about some of the Indonesian CD’s which i recommend. So heres the first episode of Indonesian Sounds. In this virgin post, loud and distortion heavy rock albums will be featured
